“ My focus is on still life and landscape in the realist tradition. My early works were in acrylic. After a long career at UC Berkeley, I retired to paint full-time. I’ve branched into oils — experimenting with various oil paints, mediums, and surfaces.
I set up my still life subjects in the studio — spending many hours selecting objects and searching for the best arrangement and lighting. For my landscapes I usually start with a few thumbnail sketches or even a small painting.
I try to have two or three canvases started at any given time. Then when I step back from my easel and look around the studio I am comforted to see a few promising paintings waiting for me. It is an exercise in hopefulness. "
